Scrimshaw is the age-old technique of carving on bone, perfected by sailors on interminable journeys in the age of sailing ships. It is now largely a lost art, except to ancient societies living in cold and inhospitable places. We use it on pearls which suit the medium perfectly and gives a wonderful, illustration-like effect.
