Elizabeth Taylor’s incredible collection of jewellery auctioned at Christies

Elizabeth Taylor’s incredible collection of jewellery auctioned at Christies

15-12-2011

A selection of Elizabeth Taylor’s incredible collection of jewellery was auctioned at Christies on 14th December 2011 and included 3 pieces by Theo Fennell ranging from bespoke silverware to vintage jewellery.

Christies, New York, auctioned 80 pieces of Elizabeth Taylor’s jewellery and raised an incredible £74.9 million. Part of the proceeds of the auction will go to The Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation, which she established in 1991.

Elizabeth Taylor was a long standing friend and client of Theo Fennell and over the years collected a beautiful range of Theo Fennell pieces. Theo also designed bespoke pieces for Elizabeth including the silver boxes- hand crafted from Sterling Silver and 18ct Yellow Gold, to appear as suitcases with an oval gold plaque engraved with E.T., which achieved way beyond their estimates

The sensuous 18ct White Gold with pave Diamond and Black Diamond Snake brooch, and an 18ct Yellow & White Gold and Diamond Star of David Pendant and Gold Chain also both achieved significantly higher than their estimates.

‘We are thrilled that the pieces of ours from Miss Taylor’s collection fetched such astronomic prices. She had an eye for the quirky and exotic as well as the classic and romantic. Long may there be people in the world who have such a love of jewellery and objets’. Theo Fennell

The online auction continues and includes Theo Fennell’s Silver Ghandi Ring, a beautiful 18ct Gold and Tanzanite Bracelet and Baroque Pearl Drop Earrings. The online auction closes on 17th December 2011.

The bracelet, which is crafted from 18ct white gold and 24 rubies, will be auctioned off to raise money for the NSPCC. Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream commissioned the help of Theo to mark their 80th birthday. "I loved the idea of designing something for Sudocrem which appealed to the big baby in me. I hope it raises a huge amount for the NSPCC", Theo. The one of a kind piece, which looks like a mini Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream tub, took craftsmen in our South Kensington workshop three months to make.

Penguins are getting cosy in Theo Fennell’s Christmas windows!

|

07-11-2011

Penguins- how can you not love them? They always seem so p-p-peaceful. Serious, but slightly comical, and such good parents.

We thought they would be the perfect symbol for our times, showing how to survive in the cold, and struggle and flourish in the sunshine, and bring p-p-peace on earth and goodwill to everyone.

How adorable are they, nestling in our windows? Come and see them for yourself...

The igloo ring with a penguin in it- how did that happen? Pure fantasy and beautiful craftsmanship to make this perfect little work of art.

Theo Fennell’s perfect gifts for lawyers!

Theo Fennell’s perfect gifts for lawyers!

21-10-2011

What to give the lawyer in your life –apart from total trust and your money, of course?

We have produced some wonderful pieces for the legal profession and those who use it. Bottle stoppers and rings that show bewigged lawyers as a timeless skull- witty and provocative, like the best advocates.

The perfect present for the legal in your life; for being called to the Bar or winning a case or just to treat yourself for a brief well handled.

The bottles can be reclaimed, vintage poison bottles or modern decanters; we can even find, on occasion, ancient wine bottles marked from the cellars of the Inns of Court in London. Those were the days when lawyers liked to drink!

The rings, in silver or gold also make a telling point...

Fabulous and truly original presents.

The Incredible Sitting Bull Brooch

|

07-10-2011

The skull portrait of Chief Sitting Bull is part of a collection of unique brooches entitled Sic Transit Gloria Mundi - which translates loosely as ‘How fleeting are earthly glories’ - they are indeed. However grand you are in life we all look pretty much the same in the end; but, even after life, some are more recognizable than others. This piece has utilised the extraordinary talents of eight quite unique craftsmen to bring my strange concept to reality. Like miniature cathedrals this series is the result of years of dedication and great artisans honing their skills, to allow them to be able to make such pieces. These are genuine works of art, and I don’t believe they could have been conceived, let alone made, anywhere else but here at Theo Fennell. We really are at the vanguard of the renaissance of one-off, hand-made jewellery.

Sitting Bull has been made in our workshops at Fulham Road where Philip, our recently liberated apprentice is working on his Master-Piece. He was apprenticed to our workshop at Fulham Road five years ago through the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in a ceremony going back to 1334. To achieve his ‘Freedom’ Philip needs to make a piece to the satisfaction of his master and to that of the Goldsmiths Company. This is his Master-Piece and on approval will make him a Freeman of the City of London. The piece he is working on under the eagle eye of his Master is Cleopatra. It is, thus far, a fabulous piece.

How unusual it is nowadays, in such a creative environment, to see the encouragement, time and knowledge that the older and more experienced craftsmen happily lavish on the apprentices as they do in our workshops. It is also really inspiring to see the satisfaction to be gained from being a craftsman; always learning and seeking perfection, loving the job. How worthwhile to know that something crafted by human hand will give joy and fascination for generations.

These are not pieces you will see in an airport or high street all over the world; these are genuinely unique objects de vertu and one off works of art.

The ALIAS team make their final stop on the ALIAS Tour- Vintage festival

|

04-08-2011

For the perfect end to our festival tour, the ALIAS team headed to Vintage by Hemmingway at South Bank. In only it’s second year, Vintage promised to be the most fashion focused and elegant festival so far. With outfits spanning the decades from 1920s spats to 1950s glamour, the ALIAS team were eager to see if the new faces of Alias could be discovered amongst the glitz of the yesteryears, and they were not disappointed!

Taking place inside the prestigious Royal Festival Hall, Vintage embraced the music, film, fashion, art and dance. The team were completely blown away by the vintage wears of the people we came across, who finished off the day looking as impeccable as when they arrived – without a hair pin or handkerchief out of place. The ALIAS team found some of the strongest characters so far.

The ALIAS team head to Cornwall for Port Eliot festival

|

27-07-2011

The penultimate stop on this Summer’s ALIAS tour was Port Eliot festival in St Germans, Cornwall. Port Eliot is based on the grounds of a beautiful stately home complete with maze, walled gardens and a river- perfect for a morning swim! The festival had a diverse schedule of events from cookery programmes and a flower show to Annie Nightingale and a secret DJ set by Suggs.

The festival was attended by a fashionable crowd thanks to the Wardrobe Department where the likes of Louise Gray, Anna Sui and Luella Bartley were based. With the sun blazing (at last!) we managed to find some of the most stylish and outlandish people of the tour so far, from a self styled pirate to a train conductor. Have a look for yourself and don’t forget that in a couple of weeks you will be able to vote for you think has the most individual style from everyone that has been scouted during our festival tour!

Theo Fennell at Masterpiece

08-07-2011

Our involvement in Masterpiece London was a huge success. As well as giving our existing and much-loved clients a chance to see all our new one-off pieces in one place, the exhibition brought a new and brilliant audience to Theo Fennell.

Without exception old and new friends loved the pieces and were bowled over by their design and extraordinary quality; many remarking that they had no idea such skills still existed.

We hope to continue this buzz, and the excitement of bringing true craftsmanship to new audiences, by taking part in similar shows in the future. We are hugely proud of the quality of our pieces and will continue to create exciting, innovative and beautiful jewellery.

Thank you to all who came and saw us and we hope to see even more faces next year!

Glastonbury was the second stop on the ALIAS ‘Open Road’ Tour!

|

01-07-2011

The ALIAS team headed to Glastonbury to scout individuals with the most individual style and sense of freedom. Glastonbury was the festival to be at this year with performances from megastars including U2, Coldplay and Beyonce. The festival offered a whole mud-covered sea of faces for the ALIAS scouts to choose from. From old rockers, goths, punks, cyber dudes and everything in-between, plus the old faithful Glasto hippies, our photographer shot an impressive array of the UK’s most outstanding, unwashed festival goers who embodied the spirit of Alias’ spirit of reinvention and freedom from the bonds of fashion.

Queen Elizabeth I

|

29-06-2011

So we have come to the end of the Queen Elizabeth I brooch. What a time we have had making good Queen Bess! She will be on display at Masterpiece London from the 30th June to the 5th July.

Some of the greatest craftsmen in the world have come together to realise an idea I had to revise the old concept of the head and shoulders portrait brooch. I wanted to use a skull but yet have the person recognisable, and the Virgin Queen seemed perfect to such a quintessentially Elizabethan idea.

The studio prepared the technical drawings and used a ridiculously talented stone cutter for the hair and shoulders. Staffan in our workshop, a man of extraordinary modesty and brilliance, started to hand craft the mount (her ruff, torso and details) in gold. Into this Murray our setter – equally inspired – began to set the sapphire and diamonds into her tunic. After the minute black diamonds had been set into the gold mounts, they were also set into her hair, carved from citrine. A brooch fitting was added and shanks then hallmarked. She was then ready for deep engraving, done by quite the best there is. Finally she was burnished and polished.

This piece is a complete one-off and has taken the combined skills of 7 great craftsmen. It comes with its signed design and a certificate in a hand made box.

This is how jewellery should be and its owner should have something to last forever...

Vogue’s ‘Street Lights’ Window Campaign

|

10-05-2011

The creative process is famously difficult; garrets, late nights, little to eat, angst and broken hearts. These all add to the wonder of the final work. This is reflected in the windows Kelly McCallum has done with Theo for Vogue’s ‘Street Lights’ campaign, an artistic collaboration between London’s fine jewellers, The Royal College of Art and Central St Martins.

In a three page article in this month’s Vogue, Woolton reveals that the idea for this exciting project came whilst judging the annual Theo Fennell awards at the RCA. With student’s work becoming more conceptual each year, she saw a unique opportunity to bring their originality, imagination and wit to the streets of London whilst challenging the public’s perception of jewellery.

In Kelly’s words, her windows mark ‘the creation of beauty through the study of philosophy.’ ‘Crikey’ says Theo!

Clockwise from top right:

Late at night, no rhyme can be found yet this Diamond and Amethyst Ring is around.

The Great British Novel is getting nowhere but this hand carved Ruby Skull Ring is finished.

In the darkest hour before the dawn, there is a struggle for the ‘mots justes’. But ‘Dum Spiro Spero’ on this Carpe Diem Pendant are they.

Poetic love is not yet reciprocated but this Peridot Carpe Diem Ring might change her mind…

‘Street Lights’ launches tonight on Bond Street and our installations are now being showcased in our Flagship Store on the Fulham Road.

Theo Fennell’s Royal Wedding Cake for Harrods Windows

|

27-04-2011

We are thrilled to be part of the Harrods commemorative windows for the Royal Wedding as one of the few iconic British designers invited to participate. Theo and our studio team have designed an incredible five tiered wedding cake which now takes pride of place in its own individual window along the Brompton Road.

With the Royal wedding in mind, each tier represents a vow through ornate flower detailing– Ivy for marriage, Honeysuckle for devotion “to love and to cherish”, Wood Sorrell for joy and Blackthorn “for better, for worse”. Ten of our handcrafted Silver Bees swarm through the flowers as two queen bees guard the hive at the top of the cake.

Visit Harrods windows, until Sunday 30th April, to see our striking black and pink cake flying the flag for true British design.

Many thanks go to the Queen of cakes, Jane Asher, for bringing this intricate design to life.

Theo Fennell creates a Buzz in Dubai

|

17-02-2011

On 9th February Theo was in Dubai to host a party with our partners there, Al Tayer. The event was to celebrate our Bee collection and the launch of ALIAS in Dubai. It was held at the brand new One & Only The Palm Resort, and this sensational venue was given the Theo Fennell gloss as the room glowed with pink lights and was decorated with swarming displays of pink bees and butterflies. The collections were displayed in vibrant pink cabinets with jewellery hanging from twisted black twigs and crawling with giant pink insects. The room shimmered across the sea to the extraordinary Dubai cityscape.

The party buzzed with adorable Theo Fennell and Al Tayer clients and fabulously famous guests. Everyone had a wonderful time and were entertained by a magician who defied reason and amazed us all and Theo himself, said a few impassioned words about craftsmanship and design, thanked his partners, praised his wife and daughters but mercifully managed to refrain from breaking into karaoke.

During his short trip Theo gave a lot of interviews to top journalists and some great articles have already appeared online. Click the following links to view a few; http://bit.ly/redvelvetTF, http://bit.ly/fashiongossipTF , http://bit.ly/lovestyleTF.

Bespoke

Bespoke

26-01-2011

Unlike so many other jewellers we love to design bespoke pieces and take on commissions. Our workshops are above the flagship store, in London’s Fulham Road.

We relish both jewellery and silver work and believe that the quality of our concepts, the originality of our designs and the brilliance of our craftsmen means that these pieces will thrill generations.

It needn’t be more expensive than buying off the peg and, sometimes, just a few original tweaks can perform a miracle. Having something made with materials that resonate, Welsh or American gold perhaps or a birthstone and with details dear to the wearer, a favourite flower or star sign, can make a piece unique and truly belong so it becomes Mary’s ring or Granny’s brooch, not just an ephemeral whim of fashion.

It is not difficult to have a piece made. Just ask at any of our outlets or come to the flagship and we will treat you gently!

Tryst

Tryst

06-01-2011

The Tryst ring revives the tradition of giving a ring to someone just because you love them. Someone you have known for a few weeks who has stolen your heart, someone you have known for decades and want to remind how you feel or someone you long to spend your life with. It is a lovers’ ring..... no more, no less.

Each one is so very unusual; the type of metal, the stone, the little birds or flowers as decorations and symbols that all mean it really can be uniquely yours. Make a tryst and see where it leads..... so romantic.
